The Inspired Plate – Food on Black – Monthly Food Photography Challenge

I came across a Halloween dessert online and thought it would be perfect to pop the orange on a black background! So alas here are my Halloween cupcakes.Β  I also have a confession to make…this was my first time EVER using a frosting bag with a tip. I’m not a huge baker, I prefer to make entree’s because I’m not huge into sweets but my husband is and he is forever grateful πŸ˜‰

The Inspired Plate – Summer Dessert

Wow this month’s challenge was so much fun to make and shoot.Β  Although I had a few different ideas, I chose to go with something that I’ve been wanting to try out; Frozen Yogurt! Because I bailed on last month’s challenge am an over achiever I decided to shoot a couple different frozen desserts…one easy peasy and one a little more challenging.

Peach Frozen Yogurt

Ok so these chocolate covered Bananas were supposed to be the easy dessert BUT trying to get the chocolate neatly on the frozen bananas and lollipop sticks were tricky!!! I should have used popsicle sticks but I improvised with what I had on hand. They are delicious though and licking chocolate off my hands was worth it πŸ˜‰

Hawaiian Salad

I can’t take credit for this recipe, my Grandmother used to make it frequently (along with many others I’m sure) and when my Mom mentioned she made it I jumped for joy.Β  I haven’t had this since sweet salad for years and it brings back so many nice memories of my Grandmother and family gatherings during the hot summer months. This simple salad contains mandarin oranges, pineapple, mini marshmallows and shredded coconut. It’s perfect when chilled out of the refrigerator on a hot humid day!

Food Magazine Inpsiration – The Inspired Plate

I recently joined an amazing group called The Inspired Plate, a wonderful group of female photographers from around the country that hold monthly food photography challenges. I’m so excited to be apart of this and share everything I’m learning each month. This month was to shoot an inspired magazine cover photo. I choose Strawberries as my recipe base and originally as of this morning this was supposed to be a tart BUT I realize I’m not a great tart baker and my first tart bombed because I cooked it too long and the tart pan I bought was a little bigger than what the recipe called…details matter people! πŸ˜‰ Anyway, I improvised and ground the tart shell in a food processor and made it into a Tart in a Jar! Perfect for summer and tonight’s dessert with family πŸ™‚ Hope you like my inspired magazine cover, I loved designing the cover and well I’m very happy with how well it all came together.

Strawberry-Walnut Crumble Bar

This little dessert has my heart. Not only was it super easy to make but it tastes so freaking good! I’m not a super huge sweet tooth when it comes to baked goods but this perfect delight suits me perfect. It was also gone in two days which is good and bad; good because I hate to waste food and bad because Summer is around the corner, the last thing I want to do is bake, eat, photograph…rinse and repeat.I didn’t have Raspberry Jam on hand so I substituted with Strawberry. I can’t wait to try some other variations!

I found this recipe online through…yup you guessed it! Foodgawker! The husband LOVED it so much he ate two! I love that I have all of the ingredients in my house all the time so this is something that I can make on a whim when I have a sweet tooth, isn’t it great when things work out?!
